The sun was rising on the horizon. Threads of yellow and orange were streaking out over the ocean. Tomek sat just on the edge of the water, the toes of his sneakers getting splashed only by a particularly large wave that hit the beach. He had moved from Poland to California less than a year ago and been running shipments up and down the American Pacific coast. He thought about them as he sat on the beach watching the sunrise after an early morning delivery. When his children were out of school he would bring them here, let them talk to him about the opportunities they’d had in class to learn and prepare for their own future careers. He smiled, thinking about their small home and he no longer had to drive every day of the week to afford it. His youngest daughter had fallen off her bicycle and, with the benefits at his job, they were easily to get medical care for her injury. He thought he might surprise her with a trip to get ice cream, a new ice cream shop had opened up in the neighborhood. The sun continued to rise over the Pacific ocean, lighting up the sand around him. A few joggers ran along the beach talking about all of the different things they would do that day. He listened, realizing he could make the decision to do those things too. He had made a choice to change his life, learned a new truck driver vocabulary for his new home, and made a better life.
